Selwyn is a ski, snowboard and tobogganing resort in the Snowy Mountains. It’s often overlooked by those heading to Perisher or Thredbo however for first-timers, it’s a real hidden gem. It has lots to offer for all the family, as well as being cheaper and less busy. If you’re a beginner looking to try the snow for the first time, look no further.

Where is Selwyn?

Selwyn is located in the Snowy Mountains, Kosciuszko National Park. The resort is 2.5 hours drive South of Canberra and takes the same amount of time to get to from Sydney and Melbourne as Perisher or Thredbo. It is just 7km away from the town of Kiandra which is considered the birthplace of Australian skiing.

Address: Selwyn Snow Resort, 213A Kings Cross Rd 02, Kiandra NSW 2629, Australia

How big is Selwyn?

Selwyn has 24 trails and 6 ski lifts covering an area of over 100 acres. It features predominantly beginner and intermediate runs, but there are (at time of writing) three advanced runs too.

How long should I spend at Selwyn?

If you’re learning to ski for the first time, the best way to get up and running is just to practice. If you just want to get a taste and see if you like it, a day or two will suffice, however, if you actively want to learn to ski or snowboard, 5-7 days would be better. Selwyn is a smaller resort but while you’re having lessons and practicing, it’s good to repeat some of the same runs and better to have less crowds.

Accommodation

Selwyn doesn’t have accommodation on site but it does have lots of cute nearby towns with guest accommodation. These are typically a 30 to 45-minute drive from Selwyn.

Staying in Jindabyne/Cooma (1.5 hours), Canberra (2.5 hours) and Wagga Wagga (2.5 horus) are further great options if you want to make it a slightly longer trip and explore some non-snow based places too.

Why should I go to Selwyn ski resort?

If you’re an advanced skier or snowboarder, Selwyn probably isn’t the right fit for you, but for snow newbies, beginners and intermediates, it’s a great option for a snow trip.

  1. Budget-friendly
A day lift pass at Selwyn costs just $109 (or $25 on a Wednesday!!). Perisher costs $249 and Thredbo between $199 and $219 by comparison. Ski and snowboard lessons at Selwyn are also cheaper too.

  2. Fewer crowds
As it’s a smaller resort, and not very well known, you’ll have less skiers and snowboarders around. Queues are usually small (if any) and unlike Perisher & Thredbo the road rarely closes due to too many people.

  1. Beginner friendly
With heaps of very reasonably priced lessons available and fewer skiers and snowboarders wheezing around, Selwyn is ideal for beginners.

How much does it cost to go to Selywn for a day?

  • Lift pass = $109

  • National parks pass (per car/day) = $29

  • Gear - skis & poles/ snowboard, boots, jacket, pants & helmet = $110 from Rhythm Snowsports

Where can I hire ski & snowboard gear for Selwyn?

You can hire gear directly at the resort—skis/boards, boots, jackets, pants, helmets—but it will be cheaper to rent it from us at Rhythm Snowsports Cooma on your way past the mountain.

For example, our store in Cooma supplies numerous skiers, snowboarders, and snow playgoers with their gear to go to Selwyn. We offer flexible pick-up and drop-off, so you can pick your gear up the day before, ready for an early start on the slopes, should you wish.

Other resorts

Alongside Selwyn, Perisher and Thredbo, Charlotte’s Pass resort offers an alternative for skiers and snowboarders seeking a quiet option. Charlotte’s Pass offers a unique experience as the only way in and out is by an oversnow transport vehicle making the experience completely "On Snow".
