Snowshoe Hire

The Snowy Mountains have heaps of great spots for snowshoeing, which is why we have such a large range of snowshoes to hire and buy. From families heading to the snow for the first time, to snowboarders who want to hit the backcountry, snowshoeing is for everyone.

If you’ve never snowshoed before you’re in great hands. Our team have a wealth of experience fitting snowshoes and love snowshoeing themselves, so they know all the best places to go and things to avoid. They are genuine experts (one of them even used to snowshoe to school!). To find out more about trying snowshoeing for the first time, read our guide here.

Will someone show me what to do?

Absolutely. We want you to have fun and be safe on the snow so we’ll talk you through everything from putting on your shoes to where to go. Snowshoes are easy to get the hang of, perfect for all the family to enjoy.

Can I wear my own hiking boots?

Yes, you can however they need to be waterproof and insulated otherwise the snow will get you cold and wet - now a fun feeling! We usually recommend that customers hire boots from us so that they don’t need to worry about this. Our boots will also dry out more quickly than hiking boots, ideal for back-to-back days.

You cannot go snowshoeing in trainers.

Do I need to hire poles?

Poles are optional but it does make things easier. They’re included in the snowshoe rental price and will help you as you get started. As you become more experienced, poles are also useful for testing the depth of the snow.

Do I need/ can I hire gaiters?

Gaiters are optional and are only really necessary if you’re going into deeper snow. If you’re new to snowshoeing, we recommend keeping to the trails and groomed areas meaning you also won’t need gaiters.

How do I put on a snowshoe?

If you’re renting with us, we’ll shw you how to put on your snowshoes when you come in to pick them up. For a Tubbs snowshoe (one of the most common brands you’ll see, and one of the rentals we stock), you’ll put your toe just over the binding then tighten over the top and adjust the back. Taking them off is super easy, just pull up on the bindings and you’re on your way out!

Can I snowshoe in Perisher and Thredbo?

You can snowshoe in Thredbo and Perisher, with designated snowshoe trails in Perisher. The snowshoe trail map is available online but we can also talk you through it in person.

At both Thredbo and Perisher you can also snowshoe off the marked trails but there are certain restricted areas. If you end up next to a groomed slope or piste, please ensure that you walk on the edges only and not down the middle. This is for your own safety as well as not churning up the piste for skiers and snowboarders.

Do you have kids snowshoes?

Yes! Snowshoeing is great for all the family, and we have specific kids snowshoes to rent too.

I have big feet, will the snowshoes still fit?

Absolutely! We stock two different types of snowshoe in our rental fleet, one of which is perfect for big feet.

Do you offer group rentals?

Yes, we offer group rentals. We’ve seen a surge in popularity with schools and scout groups for snowshoeing and kit out many groups each year. For larger groups, we recommend calling the team to make your booking.
